Shop window lighting is a key factor in attracting customer attention and increasing sales. In an increasingly competitive retail environment, a well-lit display can make all the difference. Key Tips to Professionally Light a Shop Window

A good window display must ensure visibility, visual clarity, originality, and differentiation. To achieve this, lighting plays a central role. Here’s what you need to consider:

1. Colour Temperature

Colour temperature directly influences the emotions a display evokes. For warm and inviting atmospheres, warm tones (2700K–3000K) are recommended. For accurate colour rendering, combine neutral or cool tones with a high CRI.

The ideal setup includes spotlights with different colour temperatures depending on the product displayed, creating contrast and greater visual dynamism.

2. Colour Rendering Index (CRI)

The CRI should be ≥80 to ensure colour fidelity. In retail, it's crucial that products are perceived as they truly are when purchased.

3. Beam Angle

This defines how light is distributed and which areas are illuminated. A narrow beam angle creates focused light and strong shadows. A wider beam produces uniform and soft lighting. The choice depends on object height and layout.

4. Light Intensity

The amount of light must be sufficient to stand out against natural light. A minimum of 2,000 lux is recommended for outdoor shop windows.

Darker colours require more light, while lighter backgrounds allow for lower intensity levels.

Common Mistakes in Shop Window Lighting

  • Using fixed luminaires with no adaptability.
  • Placing lights in a way that causes glare.
  • Ignoring changes in product layout or background colour.

Solution: use lighting control systems and luminaires with adjustable optics.
