Led existing types and what to use them for

LED lights have evolved since their inception to completely displace all other types of light due to their high energy efficiency and the wide range of applications they offer. And although there is a tendency to consider only aesthetic or brightness issues when choosing and purchasing LED lights, there are several types of LEDs that need to be taken into account.

New call-to-action

Understanding the differences between some types of LEDs and others or the different components that make them up is important to be able to choose the most suitable one for each specific product and space.

Do you want to know how to distinguish the different types of LEDs that exist? Then this article is of interest to you.

How many types of LEDs are there?

From LED lights in electronic devices and household appliances to decorative luminaires, the types of LEDs vary greatly and are adapted to each product and functionality.

We can distinguish between:

  • LED DIP (Dual In-Line Package)

Of all the types of LEDs, this is the first one that comes to mind when referring to LED lights in general. It is a light consisting of a diode covered by a hard plastic housing, the colour of which defines the colour of the light emitted by the LED. From this housing, there are also two parallel connection pins.

These types of LEDs are not exactly the most efficient in terms of light efficiency, so they are mainly used as indicators in various electronic products and household appliances.

SMD LEDs (Surface Mounted Diode)

SMD LED types are much more efficient than the previous types. The diode in this case is encapsulated in a rigid resin soldered to the surface of the circuit.

Thanks to these types of LEDs, which allow 3 diodes to be included on the same chip, it is possible to achieve white light with the combination of the three primary colours, which is why their development was a great advance in technology.

  • COB LED (Chip on Board)

By incorporating several LED diodes in the same package, COB LEDs have been able to reduce manufacturing costs by up to 20%.

They have a high luminous efficiency, which can exceed 120 lumens per watt. In addition, their design allows heat to be dissipated efficiently, making them the perfect type of LED for luminaires that need to be on for long periods of time.

  • Micro LEDs

As you can tell from the name, these are microscopic types of LEDs that are often used in flat panel display design.

How to use LED types

SMD LED types are the most widely used and widespread. They have a good shock protection, with a colour rendering index of 80 and with the RGB system it is possible to combine millions of colours.

Different types of SMD LEDs are available on the market, such as the 3528 which is used for small and medium-sized bulbs and can be controlled via a dimmer. This type is one of the most economical and is mainly used for LED strips which are used in architecture and interior design as decorative light or inside cabinets.

The COB LED types, however, are also widely used in interior design and architecture, but in this case outdoors.

What is the brightest type of LED

COB LED types are the ones that provide the highest light output, which is about 110 lumens per watt. And considering that with the same size as an SMD LED it provides more light output, it has already become one of the most widely used types of LEDs in spotlights.

The types of LEDs are no secret to Faro Barcelona. With years of experience in lighting, we know in depth the different applications of LEDs in each of its types. Do you still have doubts?
