Lighting for wine cellars and wine cellars: tips for illuminating a dark space

12 Feb 2024

Beyond the aesthetic result expected from a winery, its main function is to preserve the wines in their optimal state, and that is why LED lighting for wineries is very special and particular. It must be planned in such a way that it does not interfere in the wine maturation process or cause any kind of negative effect on the quality of the wine.

  •   Don't over-light the space
The issue that makes wine cellar lighting a bit more complex is the fact that the light can affect the quality of the wine.

Unlike what happens with the lighting of other spaces that should revolve around people and their comfort, in LED lighting for wineries the center is always the wine.

In this case, therefore, in order to always seek maximum functionality and lighting comfort, two issues are important:

Having the right level of lighting to ensure good wine preservation.
Correct selection of the luminaires for the project

Use LED lamps to better preserve wines
LED lamps are a great advantage when it comes to LED lighting for wine cellars. Taking into account that high power is not needed in these spaces, LED lamps stand out because they do not emit heat, which is quite appropriate if delicate products such as wines are illuminated.

It is important to always choose a quality LED that is prepared to work at low temperatures, since wineries usually have refrigeration to preserve the temperature of the wine.

In addition, all electrical equipment used, such as drivers and transformers, should be installed outside the cellar space, as they give off heat and can change the temperature of the cellar or cause the cooling machine to work more than it should.

Pay attention to the color temperature of the light.
When it comes to LED lighting for wine cellars, architecture also has a big influence. While older style cellars with stone walls require a light color temperature of between 2200 K and 2700 K, more modern spaces with steel shelves are better suited to luminaires of around 3000 K.

Use soft and low intensity lighting
In the LED lighting of wine cellars, the perfect thing would be to illuminate the space in a soft way, using low intensity lights and if possible indirect, to create a calm and relaxed atmosphere.

The wine bottles can be illuminated simply with the residual light of the room. To achieve this lighting, one option is to use surface luminaires with light flush with the wall, LED strips in skirting boards to illuminate the floor, or LED strips in ceiling coves. In these cases, also remember to always avoid recessed luminaires in the floor to illuminate walls.

Although at first glance it may seem that there are too many issues to take into account in the LED lighting of wine cellars, in reality it is enough to follow our advice: use indirect lighting to achieve a comfortable atmosphere and a light that does not fall directly on the wine.
