10 Lighting Design Books you should know about

23 Abr 2022

Lighting is a fundamental element in the perception of architecture. Over the years, architects, lighting designers, interior designers and technicians have compiled all the lessons and experiences about light in a multitude of books.

In this article, we share with you the recommendations of the best books on lighting design to better understand how light works and how to project it to achieve the well-being of people and improve the performance of the physical, mental and emotional state.

1. Lighting by Design

A book written by Christopher Cuttle that provides guidance on where to find inspiration for lighting ideas, how to plan the technical details and how to execute the plan to create safe, effective and beautiful schemes.

2. Lighting Modern Building

Derek Philips wrote this book at the end of a career as an architect and lighting designer. Lighting Modern Building explores the experience gained from living through a period of intense lighting development from 1956 to the millennium. It bridges the gap between today's architect and lighting engineer, from the point of view of the 'independent lighting designer'.

3. The lit environment

Derek Phillips discusses outdoor lighting and all the issues raised by the perception of light for people outside buildings.

4. The Lighting White Paper

This is a guide of good practices, recommendations and regulations on everything related to the world of lighting, developed over the years by the different working teams of the Spanish Lighting Committee.

It consists of 7 volumes, classified according to related subjects.

5. Architectural Lighting: Designing With Light And Space

The latest addition to the Architecture Briefs series provides a critical approach and conceptual framework for understanding the application of lighting in the built environment. Key lighting design considerations are illuminated through accessible text and instructional diagrams. Six built projects provide readers with concrete examples of the ways in which these principles are applied. Short essays by architect Steven Holl, artist Sylvain Dubuisson and landscape architect James Corner explore the role of lighting in defining spatial compositions.

6. Fundamentals of Lighting: Studio Instant Access

This book presents an integrated approach to the study of lighting and design. It includes the basics of the lighting system, lighting and the design process, human factors, sustainability, global issues, regulations, business practices and the LEED building certification programme.

7. The SLL Lighting Handbook

Peter Boyce provides a valuable link between the SLL Lighting Guidelines and the Lighting Code in this book, which summarises the fundamentals of light and vision, covers lighting technology and provides guidance on a wide range of applications, both indoors and outdoors. It is essential reading for lighting professionals, lighting specifiers and lighting students.

8. Architectural Lighting Design: A Practical Guide

Where do you start if you want to light an interior space? What is the best colour temperature for your design scheme? What should you consider when choosing LED lamps and luminaires?

This book answers these questions and more in a comprehensive introduction to interior lighting design, application and techniques. Using real examples of successful lighting schemes, experienced designer Admir Jukanovic explains the basics of lamps and luminaires, and how to meet the requirements of a design brief.

Topics include treatments and techniques for lighting designs; tips for understanding deliverables and meeting the brief; the five phases of the project, from concept to commissioning; and common pitfalls to avoid when using artificial lighting in architecture.

9. The Landscape Lighting Book
