You already know that lighting has the power to influence moods or the sensations that a space transmits, but what if we told you that you can adapt the lighting of a room to the needs you have at any given moment?

With this device it is possible to make the same space change completely to ensure maximum comfort and well-being at any time of the day and for any activity, you want to carry out. In this article, we tell you what a dimmer is and how you can use it to merge comfort and functionality in your architectural project, do not stop reading!

What is a dimmer?

A dimmer is a mechanism with which it is possible to regulate the intensity of the lights through a wall switch, usually in the form of a rotary or rotary switch. By activating the switch, the intensity gradually increases or decreases until it reaches the exact point you are looking for at any given moment of the day.

But understanding what a dimmer is is not enough to be able to use it, since, although its function is very clear, it is necessary to have lights that have the possibility of being dimmed to be useful.

In short, it is a system that can be integrated both wirelessly and through wiring in installations such as homes, offices, or any other type of space that needs to regulate the intensity of its lights.

Moreover, with Dim-to-warm technology, it is also possible to change the color temperature as the intensity increases or decreases. In this way, a warmer illumination is obtained when the light becomes dimmer and vice versa, accompanying the atmosphere that is needed at any given moment. This is undoubtedly a very useful technology both in homes and workplaces where lighting needs to change throughout the day.

How does a dimmer work?

If you already know what a dimmer is, now it is time to know how it works to understand exactly how to improve your architectural project.

Taking into account that the lighting that is used with the dimmer must have the mechanism to be regulated, the function of the dimmer is to open and close the lighting circuit by decreasing or increasing the amount of energy that reaches the light, which translates into an increase or decrease in the intensity of the light.

This function, therefore, not only means greater comfort and total adaptation of the lights to the needs of the users but can also lead to a significant reduction in energy consumption.

In addition, a dimmer has the particularity of remembering the last setting that was made to return to this configuration when the lighting is turned on again, so that comfort and convenience are assured.

Types of dimmer keys

Although dimmers are installed on the wall as a switch, the keys that can be found to operate them are generally the following:

Wheel: the intensity of the luminaires increases when the wheel is turned to the right or decreases when it is turned to the left.

Push-button: keeping the button pressed increases or decreases the intensity.

What to consider when choosing a dimmer.

Now that you know what a dimmer is, it is also important that you know what to consider when incorporating one into the lighting system of your project.

The first thing you should know is that a dimmer can only be used with fixed installation luminaires. But it is also necessary to bear in mind that each luminaire has a dimming protocol, so choosing a dimmer will not depend on the type of luminaire you have, but rather on whether the dimming protocol of this luminaire is compatible with a particular dimmer.

Most likely, everything is conditioned by the domotic system of the installations, so the luminaires will be installed as a result of this system, and with it, the compatible dimmers, to make possible the dimming of the light intensity.

When and where to install a dimmer.

As mentioned above, a dimmer can be the perfect complement for any type of space, whether offices, homes, and even industrial facilities whenever you want to achieve a comfortable and adaptable regulation of light intensity.

However, the installation of a dimmer can be done simultaneously with the installation of the luminaires, making sure that they are compatible, or choosing a dimmer that adapts to the dimming protocol of the luminaires you have already chosen (as long as they can be dimmed).

At FARO Barcelona it is possible to know in advance the type of dimmer that goes with each luminaire, but if you still have any doubts about what a dimmer is or what it can bring to your architectural project, do not hesitate to contact us and we will solve all your doubts.
