5 advantages of ceiling fans vs. air conditioners

29 Jun 2022 // by Laia Canalejo

With the arrival of good weather and rising temperatures, homes accumulate heat and become progressively warmer. An economical, healthy and decorative way to keep your home cool is to use a ceiling fan.

Although the arrival of the heat means the start of the holidays for many people, it can also lead to hot flushes, bad moods and difficulty falling asleep. Temperature influences our mood and sometimes we need to regulate it to achieve the desired state of happiness. For this, the ceiling fan can be a great ally.

  1. It does not have a negative impact on health.
  2. Its energy consumption is low.
  3. It has a very low environmental impact.
  4. It is a very decorative option.
  5. It can be used for both cooling and lighting.
  6. Its cost can be very low.
  7. It adapts to all types of spaces: kitchen, dining room, bedroom...
  8. The useful life of a fan is long.
  9. Maintenance is very simple and inexpensive.
  10. It is easy to install and does not require an air outlet.

Ceiling fan VS air conditioning

Let's look at the advantages of the ceiling fan over air conditioning one by one:

1. FHealthy coolness

The ceiling fan is an efficient system that provides a pleasant cooling sensation of up to 8º less than the actual temperature. Although it does not lead to a real drop in temperature, it increases the feeling of coolness in a healthy way.

In addition, unlike air conditioners, the ceiling fan does not leave a dry environment that can affect the eyes or throat, as it does not need to condense the air. Nor does it cause the typical summer colds, because the ceiling fan avoids creating large temperature differences or artificial air that can be harmful to people.

Ceiling fans do not produce air, but move the air that is already in a space, which is much healthier and gives an infinitely more natural feeling.

2. Energy saving

At present, air conditioners are probably thought of as the best way to ventilate a room. However, ceiling fans are much more efficient solutions. They consume less energy, saving up to 47% compared to any air conditioner, so your home or your clients' homes won't have to worry about energy bills at the hottest times of the year.

By running on current, even at the lowest intensity, they are able to move the air enough to provide the same breeze you would feel at the seashore.  To give you an idea, on average, a fan running at the highest speed consumes less energy than a 100W light bulb.

Furthermore, the use of ceiling fans not only contributes to household savings, but also reduces the environmental impact, as the impact on the environment is much lower than in the case of air conditioning.

3. Decorative solution

In 1882 Philip Diehl invented the first electric ceiling fan and since then, the ventilation sector has evolved into designer pieces that adapt to all indoor and outdoor environments. Nowadays, we can find fans in different colours, sizes and with a wide variety of designs and styles (classic, retro, modern, children's, colonial, outdoor...).

The ceiling fan allows you to add personality to the room where it is installed, as another piece of decoration. In addition, if the one chosen has built-in light, it will fulfil a triple function: to cool, to illuminate and to decorate.

Thanks to changes in design, they have gone from being an industrial element with a single, very clear function, that of ventilating large spaces in the most economical way possible, to being an element capable of being a differential point in interior design.

It is a perfect balance between practicality, aesthetics and energy savings that make it the perfect solution for any space.

4. Anti-insects

As we have already mentioned, ceiling fans improve the quality of the air in the spaces in which we live, but they are also the perfect option to combat insects such as flies and mosquitoes.

Do you like being outside when the wind is blowing? Of course you don't. Well, the same thing happens to mosquitoes and flies. Insects avoid the uncomfortable feeling of the air blowing against them and look for more peaceful places.

The air displaced by a ceiling fan makes the insects feel they are in an unsuitable environment, which causes them to disappear from the site.

Furthermore, contrary to popular cultural explanations, mosquito bites are not due to the "sweetness" of the victim's blood, but to the quality of the carbon dioxide (CO2) we release when we breathe. If we had a fan running, the carbon dioxide would expand randomly, making it impossible for the mosquito to detect the location of its target.

5. Ease of installation

The installation of a ceiling fan is much easier than any air conditioner, because they do not need to have an air outlet inside the building, only a light socket is needed.

Furthermore, contrary to popular belief, a ceiling fan does not need to wobble or make any unexpected noise after installation if it is carried out correctly.
