How to install a ceiling fan

The ceiling fan is the best ventilation system for cooling a space in a healthy and pleasant way. Installing it is not impossible and is within the reach of everyone, although at first glance it may seem a little complicated.

It is only important to take the necessary safety precautions, follow the step-by-step instructions and make sure you have all the tools you will need during the process.

That said, if you want to know every step on how to install a ceiling fan, read on because we tell you about it below.

General advice

  • The installation must always be carried out on ceilings suitable for the installation.
  • Make sure you have all the necessary tools.
  • The electrical current must be switched off
  • Select the right fan for your space.

Installing a ceiling fan step by step

Please note that the installation may vary in some details depending on the model you have, so it is best to follow the instructions of each specific model to the letter.

Phase 1: Assembly of the fan

1.1 Check that you have all the necessary parts. Remove the engine from its packaging and mount it on a soft surface. Do not lay the engine on its side, as this could damage it.

1.2 Remove the safety pin.

1.3 Pass the cables through the seat post.

1.4 Fit the pin and clevis.

1.5 Tighten the screw that holds the pin.

1.6 Replace the crystal and the rosette and replace the ball and pin.

1.7 Finally, position the fan blades, making sure that they are positioned in the correct direction.

Phase 2: Installation of the fan

2.1 Install the bracket, make sure the screws are securely fastened to the ceiling and hang the fan.

2.2 You will find three wires: the blue neutral wire, the brown phase wire and the yellow or green earth wire. Make sure that the connections are correct, joining each wire with the wire of the same colour in the fan and the installation. If you have any doubts, you can consult our technicians.

2.4 Add the trim where the cables will be hidden.

2.5 Finally, when testing the fan, start with the highest speed and then work your way down. Remember that it takes 120-150 seconds for the fan to stabilise at the selected speed.

Special instructions depending on the type of roof

The installation of a ceiling fan can vary in some details not only depending on the model, but also on the type of ceiling on which it is installed. In order to know how to install a ceiling fan with the latter in mind, there are some recommendations that you should take into account.

Pitched roofs

Installing a ceiling fan on a sloping roof is not as complicated as it may seem, as there are models that are suitable for this type of roof.

  • Choose a fan suitable for this type of ceiling.
  • Make sure of the degree of inclination that the fan can withstand.
  • Please note that the maximum angle of inclination at which your fan can be installed is 20°.
  • Follow the product specific instructions.

Concrete slab ceilings

Plastic, fibre, nylon or preferably metal expansion plugs should be used to install fans on this type of roof.

Forged ceilings with vaulted ceilings

When dealing with a hollow element, it is best to use steel tipping dowels when installing the ceiling fan.

False ceilings

False ceilings are those that are not directly attached to the slab, but leave a hollow space, and are usually made of plasterboard and cardboard, plaster or gypsum fibre panels.

In these cases, as in the case of hollow-core ceilings, the use of steel rocker arm dowels is recommended.

Tools required for installation

Of all the tips we can give you on how to install a ceiling fan, one of the most important is to have real tools, so if you're missing something when it comes to fitting, it's better to go out and buy it than to use whatever tools you can find around the house.
