Benefits of motion sensors for your lighting projects

20 Aug 2021

Energy efficiency is an increasingly sought-after issue in the lighting of any space. The implementation of more sustainable lighting systems that lead to less economic expenditure is already one of the main objectives that lead to the continuous development of new ways of lighting with new products, such as motion detectors.

Here you will find all the information you need about them, how they work, their advantages, and how they can make the space you design stand out with their comfort, originality, and energy efficiency.

What is a motion sensor

A motion detector is a device that, when it detects movement in a specific space, sets a lighting system in motion by turning lights on or off.

There are four types of sensors when you consider how they perceive movement:

  • Ultrasonic motion sensors
  • by infrared
  • dual sensors
  • Bluetooth sensors

These motion detectors are common, especially in contract spaces, as homes and other similar facilities do not have enough movement of people to require this type of lighting control.

They are electronic devices widely used in common areas, such as hallways or entrances, where there is a lot of movement of people, both to facilitate the passage and make the lighting more comfortable and to obtain a greater energy efficiency at these points.

There are sensors that communicate via Bluetooth, as in our warehouse in Faro. The sensor is not wired with the luminaires, but each luminaire has a built-in Casambi module that can be programmed as needed. In this case, it is a light sensor.

When it detects that it is starting to get dark, it sends the signal to the Casambi module to turn on the luminaire. In addition, it is programmed to always have around 300LX and self-regulates according to the natural light reaching the sensor.

How does the light work with a motion detector?

Depending on the type of motion detector in question, the device will detect that there are people in this space and by configuring the activation of the lights, it will take care of turning them on or off.

Motion detectors can configure for each specific space, adjusting its range in meters, the time it takes to turn on the lights since they detect movement or even depending on the brightness (varying its operation if it is. night or day).

What does the motion sensor detect?

When it comes to ultrasonic motion sensors, they sense any change that occurs in a specific space through an ultrasonic wave that propagates throughout the area the device is programmed for, bouncing off any objects present. and thereby detecting any new object to appear. As soon as a new object is detected, the device activates the luminaires.

However, infrared motion sensors detect when an object interrupts the projection beam. In addition, it also perceives temperature variations, and when a certain temperature is detected, the sensor closes the circuit and activates the luminaires. It is one of the most widely used types of sensors in lighting.

Dual sensors, on the other hand, combine the above two and are often used in spaces where motion detection can be more complicated.

Advantages of the motion sensor

Motion detectors that turn lights on or off have several advantages that have made them a very popular feature in high traffic areas:

They represent a significant energy saving because they only turn on when needed and turn off by themselves when there is no movement. This is especially useful in common areas where too much attention is not paid to turning off lights when not in use (such as in-office bathrooms, hallways, etc.).
Motion detectors bring comfort to any space, as they avoid having to worry about turning lights on or off and are very useful in work areas where you don't always have to. hands-free.

They can be used in interior and exterior passage areas. While they are particularly useful in spaces with many people, they can also be used in certain areas of homes or residential areas such as entryways or gardens.

How to install a motion detector?

Motion detectors must be placed at a minimum height of 2.5 m and can be placed both on the ceiling and on the wall. These devices must incorporate clamps to make an electrical connection to the fixtures and to the power supply.

Infrared sensors, which are the most common. One of these is for the current and another for the connection with the luminaires. At the terminals, the phase, neutral, and earth cables will come from the junction box and will exit at the same time to the luminaires.

To carry all cables from the junction box to the motion detector and from there to the fixtures, existing recessed conduits can be used.

Motion detectors can be connected to various Faro Barcelona products both in transit areas and outdoors via:

  • recessed lights
  • Wall lights
  • Floor lamps
  • applied
  • ceilings
  • hanging lamps
  • Projectors
  • challenges
  • on-walls
  • Keywords
  • Table and floor lamps
  • lanterns
